2020 is also the centennial of R.U.R., a science fiction play written in 1920 by the Czech writer Karel Čapek.
R.U.R. stands for Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti ("Rossum's Universal Robots"). Capek’s play premiered in 1921, introducing the word "robot" to the English language and to science fiction as a whole. |
The First Law
A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. |

A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. |
The Third Law
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. |
